Body of a Woman

by Carolyn Weltman
Title
Body of a Woman
Artist
Carolyn Weltman
Medium
Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
Body of a Woman was inspired by two things. My gorgeous model, Amber and a poem by Pablo Neruda entitled Body of a Woman from his book, Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair. The canvas has the poem written on the back both in Spanish and English. "Body of a woman, white hills, white thighs. You look like a world, lying in surrender." My hope is that I have done his beautiful poem justice.

Another one of your mindblowers, Sophi! A contemporary Venus of Willendorf, glorious in her profusion of forms... Magnificent, mighty, masterless!!!

Jean Cormier
Stunning work, Carolyn, and I see you are also familiar with Pablo Neruda-my husband used a quote from his poetry in one of his books... ! This painting is so beautiful! I find the ordinary to be quite extraordinary and you have certainly done justice to the poetry and real life! jean
Carolyn Weltman replied:
thank you so much, Jean. yes, i am a big Neruda fan though my absolute favourite is Arenas.

With it's languid sensuality - almost reminiscent of another of my favorite artists, Lucien Freud - and your choice of fleshy ochres over a blood-red background, this gorgeous painting makes it so hard to stop looking! Also, the self-assured line indicating a steady hand, which is what I love so much about drawing...it would make Degas jealous. Brilliant, Carolyn!
Carolyn Weltman replied:
that's very generous of you, Patrick. Freud is an artist i've studied intensely as he made a difficult transition from drawing to painting to become one of the greatest artists of the human figure ever, in my eyes. i've also found that transition to be really difficult. thanks to him, i've learnt a lot.

Walter Fahmy
This is a great painting, slightly abstracted but kept all the important elements of a beautiful female body.
Carolyn Weltman replied:
thanks so much, Walter. this is the only painting i've done where i painted straight onto the canvas with no drawing first.
