Pissed Crisis was painted during my recovery from my fourth spinal surgery, a very large double surgery. I had to wear this hard collar from Memorial Day to Labour Day. I was allowed to take it off once a day for ten minutes while I showered. I even slept in it. The day I started this painting was over 100 degrees. I had taken my daily struggle of a walk (I was still learning to walk again) to the top of my block, holding onto the wall and my cane. By the time I got back I was dispirited, angry and the sponges under my chin were awash in sweat. I tore off the collar and threw it angrily across my studio. Then, good patient that I am, I washed my face and chin, put clean pads into the collar and put it back on. In order to express my anger, I created this painting.
My perspective begins poetically with me alone. It extends out to the mood of my models, then to my drawing, my painting, and ultimately to the living spaces of my patrons. I am utterly and unashamedly ecumenical in my fascination with the human form and the imaginative capacity for loving of its inhabitants. “Carolyn Weltman is an expressive figurative artist whose work includes female, male, transgender and transitioning subjects.
